[Chapter Cover]

Bulma put the telephone down in a sharp movement.

Who did Chi-Chi think she was? What an idiot! To call her to beg from her the replacement of the windows that her husband would have broken! And what husband anyway?! Yes, she had a child with Vegeta, so what?

Since when did you have to be married to have sex with someone? And since when was she responsible for the damages her lover of shady character did?

Her irritation was making way for anger whereas her fingers nervously grabbed a pack of cigarettes. If Chi-Chi wanted her windows to be replaced, she just had to deal with him herself after all!

The expression on her face suddenly changed and the cigarette remained in the hand that just had stopped its course half-way between the pack and her lips... “Vegeta”. She thought he had gone to the others help them in their track of those mysterious people who were devastating the South of the country. How come he ended up at Goku's?

Her hand fell as it clenched around the pack of cigarettes that bend under the pressure. She can't contain the lump of sorrow that went up in her throat, drowning any other feelings she had, any other thoughts she had. Goku... The wound is still too fresh for her to think of him without being overwhelmed by a sharp pain.

Happy babblerings roused her from her dark thoughts and a small half-smile appeared on her lips. With the back of her hand, she wiped the tears that were on her smooth face before crushing the twisted cigarette in a ashtray. She then left her study to answer the call that had been relayed by the surveillance camera whose images were broadcast in a corner of her computer screen at all time.

It was with a radiant smile that, a moment after, she lifted the child, still warm from the nap he just took in the cosy nest made of blanket in his cradle.

How happy she was! What an amazing gift had life given to her!

The baby's cries rang out in the small room, he was so happy to find himself in the loving embrace of his mother.

She'd not have changed her mind or regretted her decision, even if she had been given the whole world. Of course, she had suspected from the beginning that it'd be hard to rely on the Prince of all Saiyan to be a father. But that didn't matter! She was strong enough to raise that child on her own.

Yet, she still had been upset by the look of contempt he had cast upon the new-born baby when she had shown him the first time. After all, it was a son, his heir.

But that wasn't such a big deal, maybe did he just need more time. It happened that father didn't take any interest in their children until they reached an age... or? Oh damn it! For now, that little marvel was entirely hers. That was too bad for him!

Bubbles of happiness replaced the lump of sorrow in the young woman as she heard her son's high-pitched laugh while she gently swung him from side to side.

Had he inherited of his father's abilities, as Son Gohan's? That would be strange for a mother to have so strong a child.

Well, anyway, it was clear that he hadn't inherited his bad temper, and that was better than good, the young mother thought with irony.

Her eyes darkened again while she put the young baby on the changing table. She tickled him as she undressed him, but she is thinking of something else.

Vegeta... she had really believed that the birth of his son would give him some joie de vivre. Ever since the death of their friend, Vegeta had lost that fire that made him go, now he was just the shadow of who he once was.

Of course, she had always felt this crack in his soul, the scar of a very painful wound. This was what had moved her and even helped her to see the man hidden behind the armour of his pride. But the death of Son Goku had widened this crack till it was a abyss. The determined and tireless fighter had even stopped training. He just disappeared for days, going she didn't know where, and came back too rarely to enjoy the comfort of the huge manor.

It had taken a long time to convince him, and she had thought she'd never manage to do it. But these people who killed for no known reason were the perfect opportunity to distract him from his melancholy.

But she had done it. Well, she hoped she had. In all case, when she had come back to tell him that the killers had said they were cyborgs built to kill Son Goku, he had shoot off.

She had gotten this confidential information thanks to Yamcha and Krilin who regularly gave her news of their chase. Even the authorities knew about it, but said that they didn't want to spread panic and frighten the population with stories of robotic killers.

The fools! As if people were stupid, as if the exponential increase of death could go unnoticed!

Well, that was all very nice, but that didn't explain the enigma of Vegeta's coming at Chi-Chi's. And what could have this neurotic told him to make him so angry that he broke her windows? Well, this proved at least that this story have given him some energy... 'Every cloud has a silver lining', as they said.

She bent over the giggling baby. “Gouzi-gouzi... you little rascal...” before taking him into her arms to leave the room.
